What are the Most Classic European International Football Shirts of All Time?
With Euro 2020 about to kick off, we've been trawling through football shirt history to determine the best that European international football has given us.
Here's our top 10 but do you agree? Let us know and get involved in what's sure to be a hot debate.
Possibly the most iconic Belgian shirt of all-time, this 1984 classic comes in at number 10. It's a look that wouldn't be out of place on a golf course but it appears equally as stylish on the football pitch. Belgium also had a white away kit using the same template, but nothing gets past the traditional red for us.
The third choice kit from the famous 1990 World Cup campaign and arguably the pick of the bunch. But unfortunately, having not featured during Italia '90, this kit is more associated with what followed that tournament - an early exit in the group stages of Euro '92 and a range of questionable names that you would've thought unlikely to earn an England cap. Anyhow, we love this kit and it is without doubt one of the very finest.
Belgium's second entry and the most recent shirt in our top 10, we think this is the best international shirt of the modern era feel it just about shades the classic from 1984. It's a look befitting for one of the finest groups of footballers any nation is currently able to boast for what is certainly a golden generation for Belgian football. It's a shame this kit just missed the cut for The Red Devils finest ever performance at a major tournament at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, but Roberto Martinez's men will be determined to go even further at this year's Euros, that's for sure.
Arguably 'the' cult shirt of Scottish football, our top 10 wouldn't be complete without this absolute pearler. Scotland fans have been treated to some beauties when it comes to kits but it's hard to get past this one as the pick of the bunch. This featured as The Tartan Army's away kit for the Euros held in Sweden in 1992 what could well be considered the zenith for what we now call classic football kits.
Les Bleus dans blancs! The French made this template their own in 1996 and this was no mean feat given that a multitude of other nations and clubs adopted the same look. The home kit had the same template but nothing beats this white look for us. Like the flowing football of this famous French side as it warmed up for its run at becoming world champions just two years later, it was impossible for Zidane and Co not to look good!
For Danish fans, 1992 is 'the' year to remember, but the kit of 1986 is by far their greatest-ever look. A template that fans of Southampton, Aston Villa and Coventry also enjoyed in the late eighties, this is a true icon of world football, much like the Laudrup brothers who had the pleasure of wearing it.
Ah yes, the classic look for any England fan - the 'Keegan shirt' of 1980. A shirt that transcends generations, it's just a shame the perms had to spoil it! Anyhow, this is a kit to be proud of and one that re-announced the Three Lions back into a major tournament following a torrid and forgettable era in the 1970s. That was certainly some look and some team!
Despite the team, there's one man and one man only you think of when seeing this incredible kit - the great Michel Platini. Despite players like Battiston and Tigana, Platini was the icon of French football, the only player in the 1984 squad to play outside the French league and the enduring image of the 1984 European Championships won on home soil. Not only did they have the best player in the world, France also had the best kit and one that has stood the test of time as one of the finest you'll ever see. It was no coincidence that the same look made a comeback when France won their next major trophy and conquered the world in 1998, again on home turf.
2. West Germany Home 1988-1990
A kit more fondly remembered for Das Mannschafts march to glory at Italia '90, this kit was so good it lasted for two tournaments! An iconic kit in it's own right, it was made all the more famous by the great players who wore it - Matthaus, Voller, Klinsmann... the list goes on. This is likely to be the favourite for many and is undoubtedly one of the most sought-after shirts of all-time, but for us there is one, and only one, that beats it.
That's right, the Holland kit of 1988 is our number one - the enduring and unmistakable canvas of one of the greatest teams to have ever graced the game. With the AC Milan trio of Gullit, Rijkaard and van Basten alongside players like Koeman, Winter and Wouters, their march to the 1988 European Championship title could've been considered inevitable in hindsight, but they certainly had the kit to match their greatness. Undoubtedly Holland's greatest-ever team and their greatest-ever kit.
In tribute to these fine kits, we've added each and every single one to our range for you to relive and enjoy. Click on the links above each of the top 10 to be taken directly to them or view our Euros range at here.
