Following the club's most successful season under the great Sir Bobby Robson in which Ipswich won the UEFA Cup, finished runners-up in the 1st Division and got to the FA Cup semi-final, The Tractor Boys opted for the popular pinstripe look for the 1981-82 season. Whilst Robson's men were unable to defend their European title, they again finished runners-up in the league, unfortunate not to have won it having led for the vast majority of the season. They also reached another cup semi-final, this time losing to Liverpool over two legs in the League Cup.
